Shalom Schachter

Toronto
After a long and successful career as a lawyer, primarily representing healthcare workers, Shalom decided to finish rabbinical studies which he had started at the Lubavitch Rabbinical College of Canada. He completed his training and received his ordination from ALEPH, the Alliance for Jewish Renewal in 2005. Rabbi Schachter has served small communities throughout Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba, and in large metropolitan cities Beth El (Montreal) and Beth Tzedec, Beth Sholom and Beth Tikvah  (Toronto). His most recent pulpit was as Interim Rabbi at Beth Tzedec in 2019.

Rabbi Schachter works tirelessly with interfaith communities. As the Toronto Board of Rabbi’s representative on the Toronto Christian Jewish Dialogue group, the Toronto Area Interfaith Council, the Canadian Interfaith Conversation and on the Executive Committee of the Interfaith Social Assistance Reform Coalition.

During the Covid19 pandemic Rabbi Schachter’s leadership in the interfaith community has enhanced advocacy for better safety conditions and compensation for essential workers and better living conditions and protections for residents of long term care homes. He has helped to point out gaps in the income support measures adopted by the Federal government, some of them which were subsequently remedied. Rabbi Schachter’s overall approach is that the precariousness we have all recently experienced should lead to us to advocate to alleviate precariousness from those who experience it as a regular part of their lives.
