In examining Nehemiah, our first politician, we will explore the historical context in which he lived in Persia and his difficult mission in coming to Judea. We will discuss his style of political leadership as reflected in some of the texts in the Book of Nehemiah. We will focus particularly on how he confronted issues of security, social inequality, intermarriage, religious authority, hostile locals, international relations, and culture, and how he created a vision for the future. As well, we will question why he was not well regarded by later rabbinic authorities. Finally and most important, we will analyze his vision for Judea and the diaspora and its relevance for our present day Jewish community and Israel.
